Skeena-Bulkley Valley MP Nathan Cullen is urging the federal government to accept a new framework agreement put forward by the Pacific Salmon Commission.
The new 10 year agreement must be agreed upon by both the Canadian and US governments as it regulates salmon stocks from Oregon all the way to Alaska.
Cullen says that, with many salmon numbers hitting critical lows, a concerted effort to work together to restore populations is needed.
This means that all jurisdictions would have to accept a reduction in their fish harvests.
Discussions over the agreement have taken place over 2 years and have involved both governments and Indigenous groups.
The current agreement will expire on December 31st.
