June 21st is National Aboriginal Day, and it also coincides with the International Day of Yoga.
Last week, Premier Christy Clark announced Om the Bridge, a mass yoga celebration that will shut down Vancouver’s Burrard Street bridge for 7 hours.
Critics of the event say the focus should be on National Aboriginal Day instead, with some on social media calling for an aboriginal flashmob during the event.
John Rustad, Minister for Aboriginal Relations and Reconciliation says despite the high profile Om the Bridge event, there are many Aboriginal Day events throughout the province.
National Aboriginal Day was proclaimed in 1996 and was first celebrated that year.
The United Nations proclaimed June 21st as The International Day of Yoga last December.
