The North Central Local Government Association voted last week to support a resolution that could have a serious impact on local government officials.
At their AGM meetings in Fort Nelson last week, members voted in favour of a resolution which would see elected officials made to take a paid leave of absence following a conviction or serious criminal offense.
The proposed leave of absence would be required while the court process is completed.
Currently, there is nothing in place that would see officials disqualified upon being charged.
Terrace Councillor Stacy Tyers, who voted in favour of the resolution, was very happy with the Association’s support, but says there is still much work ahead to be completed if the resolution is to become reality.
