New Hazelton RCMP are warning the public about a couple of scams currently making the rounds in the community.
In one variation of the scheme, the caller, claiming to be from the Canada Revenue Agency, demands money for an outstanding tax balance and claims they have a warrant for the victim’s arrest.
Victims of the second variant of the scam get a call from someone claiming to be from the local RCMP detachment. The caller demands an electronic money transfer in order to vacate the warrant. RCMP say the victim’s call display may even show the detachment phone number.
Mounties say If you receive a call from someone claiming to be from the RCMP demanding money, it’s a scam.
If you get a call from someone claiming to be from the CRA asking for money, RCMP recommend you hang up and call your local Canada Revenue Agency office.
