Changes to the way MLA recall campaigns are managed in BC could be on the way.
Legislation introduced today would limit third party spending on recall campaigns as well as eliminate corporate and union donations all together.
As it stands, there are no restrictions on who can contribute to the campaigns or how much they can provide.
The Recall and Initiative Ammendment Act would see rules similar to those introduced to the Election Act this year applied to recall campaigns.
On top of the banning of union and corporate donations, individuals would only be able to donate up to 12 hundred dollars per year, and third party advertisers would be limited to 5 thousand.
The new rules would also make it so that only one recall petition can be active in an electoral district at a time, and prohibit recalls from taking place less than 6 months before a general election.
