At least 10 fish farms in the Broughton Archipelago will be closed down by 2023 as part of a new government-to-government process.
As the result of a process undertaken between three First Nations and the province, numerous recommendations have been approved which support a more sustainable future for the fishing industry.
One of these recommendations will see 17 fishfarms, operated by Marine Harvest Canada and Cermaq Canada, transitioned to cease dangerous operations by 2023.
10 will close immediately or by 2022, while the other 7 will also close unless First Nations Industry agreements are met and a valid DFO license is issued.
Other recommendations agreed to include: establishing a farm free migration corridor, developing a First Nations-overseen inspection program, enhancing wild salmon habitat restoration efforts, implementing technologies to address environmental issues, and supplying economic development opportunities for First Nations.
