A new program will bring in a fund to support coastal oyster farming communities.
The BC Oyster Recovery Fund will be providing the aquaculture sector with 1.3 million dollars in support money to help kickstart local economies.
The money will address recent challenges by supporting oyster re-seeding efforts, initiating a research project to determine travel patterns of norovirus pathogens, and helping to develop a virus warning system.
BC Oyster sales represent more than half the aquaculture industry’s value and represent more than 30 million dollars in wholesale value.
