Northern Health has two new ultrasound techs filling a service gap in the northeast and northwest thanks to a unique training program.
The Sonography Training at Rural Sites or STARS involves taking current x-ray technologists already working with Northern Health and cross educating them into ultrasound.
Dayna Van Haren is will be working three weeks a month in Dawson Creek and spending her fourth week in Fort Nelson. The Fort Nelson ultrasound position was covered by a locum that was preparing to retire, which would have left the community without an ultrasound tech.
Michael McCue filled a position in Prince Rupert that had been vacant for over two years, bringing the total number of ultrasound techs back up to two.
In exchange for Northern Health covering the cost of the program, both techs have committed to staying in their respective communities for at least two years.
