A 10 percent tariff on aluminum between Canada and the US could pose major problems for Kitimat.
According to Mayor Phil Germuth, more than 75 percent of the city’s aluminum, its main source of income, is shipped south of the border.
The Rio Tinto Alcan Smelter employs nearly one eighth of Kitimat residents, and recently spent five billion dollars to upgrade their smelter, with another half billion in upgrades on the way.
The new tariffs are set to take affect as of July 1st.
