Disappointment could be one word used to describe the Skeena watershed this year.
Historically low numbers saw DFO place a closure in the watershed earlier in the summer, but it re-opened to a limited and restricted setting on July 15th.
The ban included first nations fishing, and the federal agency noted earlier in the summer that this year mirrors 2013 which was one of the worst fishing seasons on record.
Michael Price is with Simon Fraser University and he says next year should see an improvement, however, if there weren’t spawning channels it would create some doubt.
Price says he’s concerned about next year for Sockeye, Pink, Chinook, and Chum.. and he adds he doesn’t expect to see huge salmon numbers for a little while.
