Nisga’a artist Norman Tait passes away at age 75

A BC artist who was once commissioned to carve a totem for the Royal Family has died at the age of 75.

Norman Tait was a self-taught Nisga’a First Nation artist known for his totems, but also created masks, jewelry and photos throughout his career.

He died of cancer in Vancouver on May 21st, one day after his birthday.

Tait’s daughter, Valerie Tait, says her father’s legacy will be long lasting because of his unique style and the fact that he passed the art on to so many others, including his grandson.
