Haida Gwaii residents currently do not have access to a licensed funeral director.
For many years, a volunteer helped grieving families.
But late last year, Consumer Protection BC ordered the volunteer to stop because he doesn’t have a license.
While the law says a close family member or friend may help with the family of the deceased, Jennifer Rice, NDP MLA for North Coast, says that’s a heavy burden for grieving families.
Rice says this issue doesn’t only affect Haida Gwaii, but also many other rural areas in the province.
She takes aim at Suzanne Anton, Minister of Justice and Attorney General.
Rice says she’ll continue to push the minister for a resolution.
