Smithers RCMP are responding to rumours that three women have been sexually assaulted in the town.
Police say they have not received multiple complaints of recent sexual offences in the community.
Rumours of a rapist have been circulating for the last couple of weeks, but North District RCMP say the story appears to be confined to social media only.
RCMP say any sexual offence allegation is taken seriously and investigated thoroughly. Mounties say that if there is a need to notify the public during the course of an investigation, police will issue a news release.
RCMP encourage anyone who has been a victim of crime to report it to the authorities so that they can investigate.
