The spike in fentanyl-related overdoses and deaths has BC public health officials warning the public about the dangers of the extremely powerful drug.
Fentanyl, which is at least 100 times more powerful than heroin, has been linked to four recent deaths around Vancouver and 16 overdoses on Sunday alone.
Doctor Jane Buxton is harm reduction lead with the BC Centre for Disease Control.
Buxton says while there haven’t been as many deaths and overdoses from the synthetic narcotic in northern BC, that doesn’t mean it’s not here.
Fentanyl has been linked to a number of overdoses in Kitimat and Prince Rupert, prompting warnings from RCMP.
A Prince Rupert man died in May after using fentanyl-laced heroin.
