Northern Health says it has seen little change in nurse employment levels in the 10 months since a report from BC’s Auditor General called it out as a serious concern.
According to the health authority, the biggest concern in recruitment still lies in rural communities in the northeast and northwest.
Northern Health is hoping that new recruiting strategies and a housing pilot project being launched in the northeast can help improve the situation.
The pilot project, being launched in Fort St John and Dawson Creek, aims to help recruited nurses gain access to temporary housing.
A newly formed travel pool also aims to get nurses to the areas where they are most in need at any given time.
On top of that, the authority is also supporting a UNBC application to start a nursing program in the northeast.
