Northern Rockies Regional Municipality wants province to end pulpwood agreement

The Northern Rockies Regional Municipality including Fort Nelson wants the province to end a pulpwood agreement that the local government believes is being used to “hoard” timber.

The municipality says two sizable forest tenures in the region allow the harvesting of more than one-million cubic metres of wood, but nothing has been cut since two area mills shut down in 2008.

Officials in Fort Nelson say, thanks to the downturn of the oil and gas industry, the region’s economic stability is threatened because the province is not enforcing terms of current pulpwood agreements.

Fort Nelson community development officer Mike Gilbert says it seems that tenure holders are being allowed to speculatively “hoard” wood, instead of harvesting and processing it, or allowing others to do so — and the inaction means a lack of economic activity for whole region.
