A pod of orcas was seen in Prince Rupert harbour last week.

These killer whales have been identified as a family belonging to the northern resident group of orcas.

Orcas are listed as a species at risk in Canada, and the southern resident orcas, which are found around Vancouver Island and Vancouver are endangered.

The northern residents are faring better, with a population ranging from 275 to 300.

Caitlin Birdsall is a co-coordinator of the North Coast Initiative, and she says it’s common for orcas to visit in April.

She encourages residents of the north coast to report any whales, dolphins, or porpoises they see.

Reports can be sent online at: www.wildwhales.org or at 1-866-I-SAW-ONE (472-9663).
