Parts of Cariboo region to be bug sprayed

About 160 square kilometres of forest in the Cariboo region will be sprayed over the next three weeks to reduce western spruce budworm.

The province says the biological agent Foray 48-B will be applied by aircraft in timber areas around Williams Lake and 100 Mile House.

In its larval stage, the budworm defoliates Douglas fir, true firs, spruce and larch trees and officials say an outbreak of the insect has the potential to seriously harm or kill trees over large areas.

The province says the spray only affects moth and butterfly larvae and will not affect humans, pets, birds or other animals.
