Patrick Shannon is this year’s BC Aboriginal Business award winner in the Young Entrepreneur Award category.
He has two businesses on Haida Gwaii, a creative agency called Evil Patrick by Design, and a shared co-working space for professionals called Xaayda Hub.
Shannon says one of his biggest challenges was getting people to understand what he does, in a community that’s dominated by traditional primary industries.
Shannon adds that with technology, young people no longer have to leave their homes to chase opportunities, or if they do, there’s something to return to.
He says that was one of the inspirations for starting a co-working space, so that people have a place to work.
His advice to young people trying to start up their own business is to see what does the community need, and if they help others, others will help them.
The award will be presented at a ceremony in Vancouver on October 14th.
