In a change of tune from last week, the Peace River Regional District will now be allowing some residents of Old Fort to return home briefly.
A landslide from the end of last month caused the evacuation of 200 residents of the small community.
Late last week, the Regional District issued a statement saying they would be fining all residents caught defying the evacuation order as much as 10 thousand dollars.
Now, the District will be ferrying some residents back in to the community to allow them to gather their belongings and prep their homes for winter.
Evacuees will not be able to stay long, but the District says they will continue to offer temporary access permits until all evacuees have had a chance to return home.
So far, 54 homes have been deemed to be safe enough to return to, but that could continue to be expanded as the landslide continues to move.
