People breaking Cariboo campfire ban

The Cariboo Fire Centre says not everyone is complying with a partial campfire ban in the region.

Information Officer Emily Epp says campfires are not allowed west of the Fraser River and while fires are permitted east of the Fraser, they’ve had reports of burns exceeding the size limit.

Epp says fire restrictions are in place to prevent huge blazes like the Rock Creek wildfire.

The Cariboo Fire Centre is encouraging people to report any illegal fire activity, including details about the location, people involved, and licence plate numbers so that investigators can follow up.

Members of the public can report abandoned campfires or open burning violations by calling 1 800 663-5555 toll-free or *5555 on a cellphone.
