The Canadian Coast Guard is on scene of a petroleum barge that ran aground near Bella Bella.
Coast Guard’s Michelle Imbeau says the tug and barge became aground around 1:00am this morning.
She says three of their boats are on scene and the tug itself is leaking diesel fuel but the barge was empty.
The tug, Nathan E. Stewart, and the empty fuel barge that it was pulling, ran aground on Edge Reef in the Seaforth Channel near Athlone Island.
Officials say measures have been taken by the tug operators to try and minimize the leaking.
Seven people were on board and are safe.
The owner of the tug boat and barge, Kirby Offshore Marine says they are working with all of agencies to ensure everything is reported and taken care of as soon as possible.
Heiltsuk Tribal Council says they’re working with others at the scene.
The Western Canada Marine Response Corporation has been activated to address the spill.
