WorkSafeBC has fined the owners of a Burns Lake wood pellet plant for a blast that injured three workers.
The incident happened at the Pinnacle Renewable Energy facility October 9th, 2014 during a maintenance shutdown.
The workers were standing at the open door of one of the plant’s burners when an explosion blew them off a platform.
The WorkSafe investigation found that the explosion was caused when a build-up of flammable gases in the dryer system was exposed to high temperatures from a hot-spot in the burner unit and an in-rush of oxygen through the open door.
The investigation found that workers didn’t follow procedures before opening up the burner for cleaning.
WorkSafe BC fined Pinnacle nearly $56,000 in penalties for what it says is the company’s failure to maintain safe working conditions and to exercise due diligence.
