The Gitxsan Development Corporation says it continues to move forward with plans to build a wood pellet plant in Hazelton.
The proposed $50 million dollar operation with partner Airex Energy would transform area wood waste into torrefied or blackened pellets for export to Asia.
Rick Connors of Gitxsan Forest Inc. says the proponents recently returned from a conference in Japan, where demand for wood pellets to replace coal in power plants is strong.
If built, the plant would produce 100,000 tonnes of pellets a year and create about 45 full-time, direct jobs and about the same number of indirect jobs.
Connors says the next step is to find potential international customers and financing partners.
