The Hereditary Chiefs and House Leaders of the Lax Kwa’laams Band have established a camp on Lelu Island to prevent work from beginning on a proposed LNG project.
The island is home to Flora Bank, an important ecological site for salmon and other fish and wildlife.
Ken Lawson, the Tsimshian House Leader says they’re not opposed to development, but those developments must protect the Skeena River and salmon spawning habitats.
They’ll be meeting with Premier Christy Clark this week, along with hundreds of other First Nations leaders in Vancouver.
There are also plans to organize a Northern First Nations Alliance with the Tsimshian First Nation, Gitxan First Nation, Wetsuweten First Nation, Treaty 8 First Nations, and the Council of Haida Nations.
