Tsunami warning sirens sounded all the way along the outer B-C coast early this morning following a powerful earthquake off the coast of Alaska but no damaging wave occurred.
A magnitude 7.9 quake hit southeast of Kodiak, Alaska at about 1:30 this morning and by 2 a.m., emergency procedures were rolling out in communities from Haida Gwaii to the Victoria-area, although the warning did not include Georgia Strait or Vancouver.
University of B-C student Gillian Der, who is studying on Haida Gwaii, described hearing fire trucks sirens and warnings on loud speakers urging residents in the Village of Queen Charlotte to take to higher ground, while freelance photographer Merissa Renwick said sirens wailed in Tofino.
Emergency communications officials say a three-centimetre wave was recorded in Tofino just after four a.m. and the alert was downgraded a short time later.
