Prince Rupert has passed a by-law banning non-medicinal marijuana stores.
The by-law will prohibit commercial marijuana sales within city limits until 2018.
At Monday’s council meeting, Mayor Lee Brain says the move gives the city time to develop regulations around marijuana sales in anticipation of future legalization.
Mayor Brain called the move a responsible thing to do.
City civic engineer Hans Seidemann says putting the law in place now is a proactive move.
The by-law will be the topic of a public meeting at the January 23rd council meeting, Mayor Brain says council will be guided by the public’s comments.
