RCMP jail cells in Prince Rupert will soon be up to national standards.
City Council has approved the sole bid to retrofit cells at the cramped and aging police detachment at a cost of $456,000 plus GST.
Marcan construction is expected to begin the project in mid-May with completion in ten weeks.
The jail cell retrofit is a stop-gap measure while planning for a new RCMP detachment with an estimated cost of $30 million is undertaken.
The new facility, estimated to be up and ready by 2023, is part of the city’s five-year financial plan which was adopted by council Monday.
