The City of Prince Rupert says it’s moving forward with the clean up of the Watson Island Pulp Mill site.
Ontario-based NRI Group won the RFP conducted by the city’s consulting engineers Stantec.
NRI will be responsible for removing assets and decommissioning a large portion of the derelict operation.
The bleached Kraft pulp mill, which originally opened in 1951, has remained closed since 2004 despite multiple attempts to get it restarted.
Mayor Lee Brain calls the development a big step forward and says the decommissioning will allow the site to be repurposed so that Watson Island can once again contribute to the city’s economy.
Work on the project is expected to start immediately and will take about two years to complete.
