Prince Rupert RCMP have two men in custody after a witness reported seeing two people carrying rifles shortly before 4:30 Wednesday afternoon.
Police were called to the 1600 block of 10th Ave East after someone spotted two men with rifles jumping a fence and heading into a tree line in the area.
The two suspects fled when officers got to the scene, but one of them was arrested after a brief chase. The other male fled into a wooded area, but was later arrested with the help of the Terrace RCMP police dog team.
Investigators say the two men, aged 32 and 26 remain in custody pending a court appearance.
There was a heavy police presence in the area with officers armed with carbines during the search for the suspects; however, RCMP are advising Prince Rupert residents that the arrests were an isolated incident and there is no further risk to the public.
Investigators believe the rifles may have been stolen from the area.
Anyone with information about a break-in in the area should contact Prince Rupert RCMP at 250-627-0700 or Crime Stoppers.
