Premier John Horgan has announced $134 million to help regrow forests and assist communites ravaged by the 2017 wildfires.
The Forest Enhancement Society of BC will allocate the money to 71 reforestation projects to restore ecosystems and support forestry dependent communities.
Over $99 million of the funding will go to the Cariboo with the majority focused on forest enhancement and restoration of public forests impacted by last year’s unprecidented wildfires. About 30% of the work will involve, or be led by, First Nations and their partners.
The Skeena region will receive nearly $1.7 million, the Omenica nearly $1.5 million, and the Northeast will get over $800,000.
Forests minister Doug Donaldson says the funding will benefit both the environment and the economy.
