Province introduces legislation based on mill explosion inquests

The province has introduced Bill 35, saying the legislation takes decisive action to address inquest recommendations stemming from the fiery, fatal explosions at the Babine and Lakeland sawmills.

The bill requires employers to immediately report all workplace fires or explosions that could harm workers, and to provide the findings of any investigations to the mill’s health and safety committee.

New legislation also orders mills to allow WorkSafe BC to assist workplace health and safety committees to resolve disagreements over health and safety matters.

A total of four men died in two blasts, one in Burns Lake, the other in Prince George, when explosions blamed on high levels of wood dust tore through two sawmills in early 2012.
