Province issues final round of tsunami debris funding

The BC government has awarded its final round of funding to help coastal communities deal with tsunami debris.

Over $330,000 has been allocated to six applicants to help clean up, sort, and dispose of the materials that made their way to BC in the wake of the 2011 earthquake and tsunami that struck Japan.

The Haida Gwaii Tsunami Debris Committee will receive $115,000 in the latest installment of money, making its total $254,000 since 2013.

Trent Moraes of the Skidegate Band Council says they have obligations to the land and animals affected by the tsunami debris which continuously washes ashore.

The funding was made available through a one-time grant from the Government of Japan to help clean up tsunami debris.
