Quesnel Mounties are looking for a suspect after an attempted robbery at the local Walmart.
Police were called to the store just before 9:00 p.m. Friday night. Two off-duty officers hear an employee yelling at a man who had stolen a television and threatened staff with bear spray.
The two officers chased the man through the parking lot towards Highway 97. When one officer caught the suspect and identified himself as RCMP, the thief pulled a canister of bear spray and sprayed the officer in the face at close range. Police say the second officer was also hit.
Police set up containment in the area and called for a police dog from Prince George, but the suspect fled the scene on foot and was not captured.
Investigators believe he may have had an accomplice waiting with a vehicle.
Neither officer suffered any lasting injury from the spray.
Quesnel RCMP are asking anyone with information about the incident to contact police or Crimestoppers at 1-800-222-8477.
