It’s taken nearly two years, but the North District Major Crime Unit has arrested a suspect in the death of Destiny Rae Tom.
Investigators say 26 year-old Garrett Steven George is charged with second degree murder in the death of the 21 year-old Nadleh First Nations woman.
Tom’s badly beaten body was discovered outside a home on the Nadleh Reserve near Fort Fraser on the morning of March 23rd, 2013.
During a news conference in April of that year, destiny’s mother Vivian Tom appealed to the public to come forward with information about the case. She described her daughter as a loving mother to her then three year-old granddaughter who loved life, people, and had many friends and family.
“This arrest comes as a result of a thorough investigation by North District Major Crime investigators who were determined to find out what happened to destiny,“ says Superintendent Brendan Fitzpatrick, the Operations Officer for the BC RCMP’s Major Crime Unit. “It was important for us to gather the necessary evidence to ensure the charges moved before the courts.”
RCMP says Tom and George were known to each other and the public is not at risk.
