Recommendations made in inquest to police shooting of Hazelton man

A coroner’s jury has made eight recommendations in the wake of the shooting death of a 23-year-old Hazelton man in Surrey more than two years ago.

Among the recommendations is a call for transit police to start a program similar to the RCMP’s Car 67 initiative in Surrey, which sees a mental health nurse working with Mounties responding to calls involving people with emotional problems.

Two transit police officers were responding to a call from a worried bus driver on December 28th, 2014 when they encountered Naverone Woods, who was repeatedly stabbing himself.

The officer who shot and killed Woods testified the injured man refused to drop two knives and she fired two shots, killing him as he lunged at her partner.
