A group is proposing a bike trail between Smithers and Telkwa.
The trail would be a separate path for cyclists and pedestrians that would run beside Highway 16.
Tony Harris is an organizer of the idea and believes there’s demand for a bike trail.
Harris says Highway 16 is too busy to have cyclists and people walking right beside the traffic.
He believes this can become a reality.
The idea has gained support from the mayors of both communities, the regional district, and a number of residents.
Harris says the Rotary Club has also started to chip in on funding for the project.
The next steps in the process is to put together proposals and budgets for the province to consider.
While Harris says he’s a very enthusiastic guy, he’s confident if everything is done properly, construction could start in 2018.
