Rio Tinto’s emission permit stands despite sulphur dioxide concerns

BC’s Environmental Appeal Board has upheld Rio Tinto’s permit for emissions from its Kitimat smelter.

Two Kitimat residents tried to fight the permit after learning sulphur dioxide emissions would increase by up to 55%.

Several weeks of hearings were held earlier this year but the board has ruled opponents of the emissions failed to provide enough evidence about the possible health risks.

Rio Tinto says its modernized smelter will cut overall pollution in half, but the appeal board is calling for a provincially-led health study for the area as part of an overall environmental monitoring plan.
