Skeena MLA Ellis Ross is calling on the Department of Fisheries and Oceans to allow a recreational Chinook salmon fishery in the Skeena and Nass watersheds.
Ross has penned a letter to federal fisheries minister Dominic LeBlanc asking for catch and release fishery to ease the impact on the region’s economy.
With a sweeping DFO closure of the rivers, Ross says there will be a ripple effect on local jobs that depend on recreational fishing and tourism. Ross says a catch and release fishery for Chinook would allow for conservation while supporting local jobs.
Ross has also asked forests minister Doug Donaldson for the provincial government’s support of his position.
