Rupert refinery proponent partners for pre-engineering

A company hoping to build an oil refinery near Prince Rupert has announced a partnership to further its plan.

Pacific Future Energy says it’s joining with engineering firm SNC-Lavalin and a company co-owned by former national chief of the Assembly of First Nations Shawn Atleo.

A-in-Chut Business Group and SNC-Lavalin will partner to provide pre-engineering studies for the proposed North Coast oil refinery and building First Nations partnerships.

Pacific Future wants to turn Alberta bitumen into products like diesel, gasoline, and jet fuel for export to Asia in what it says will be the world’s greenest refinery.

It’s up against two other northern BC-based projects, including newspaper publisher David Black’s Kitimat Clean refinery.

The third project, the Aquilini Investment Group-backed Eagle Spirit Energy, would see refined products piped to the coast for export.

Pacific Future Energy is looking at 2023 for its launch date.
