Lake Kathlyn Elementary school near Smithers will be closing at the end of June.
Bulkley Valley School District trustees voted 6-0 in favour of closure at a special meeting held at the school Tuesday night with one abstention.
While trustees told the crowd gathered that it was a difficult decision, they said keeping the school open would come at the cost of staff and program cuts across District 54.
The board says enrolment at the school has remained low over the last number of years while overall district enrolment has dropped.
Parents opposed to the closure say the school’s small size and student-to-teacher ratio was a benefit to children attending.
Most Lake Kathlyn Elementary students will likely wind up at Walnut Park school in Smithers.
