A scientist who studied Flora Bank says he still doesn’t support the Pacific Northwest LNG project.
Patrick McLaren wrote an open letter to the Lax Kw’alaams Band stating his continued belief that Flora Bank will be destroyed if the Petronas-back LNG project goes through.
McLaren was one of the scientists who was hired by the band, and presented his findings last year.
He says the letter was prompted by concerned band members who told him that PNW representatives were saying he agreed with their assessment that “no harm will come to Flora Bank” if the project were to go through.
But McLaren disagrees and says Flora Bank is a unique and extremely delicate ecosystem.
McLaren takes aim at the modelling technique PNW uses, saying it’s being used to reach a predetermined conclusion that’s favourable for the project.
He says while PNW’s modelling doesn’t even replicate reality, it’s being used to determine future outcomes.
McLaren adds that he believes there’s no way the PNW project can go through without harming Flora Bank.
The Lax Kw’alaams Band recently held a number of community meetings to discuss the future of the Pacific Northwest LNG project.
