Search suspended for missing boater on Kitimat River

Kitimat RCMP have suspended the search for a missing Alberta man on the Kitimat River.

Police say the 39-year-old man was fishing with three friends late Saturday morning when his inflatable boat capsized after it hit a log jam shortly after launching from the 18 Mile Bridge site.

Despite efforts by RCMP, Kitimat Search and Rescue, Terrace Swift Water Rescue, and Kitimat Fire Rescue, no trace of the missing man has been found.

Police say the Search can resume once water clarity improves and water levels recede.

RCMP say it’s not safe to launch off of the 18 Mile Bridge site at this time and boaters should instead launch using the “first washout” or at Cable Car.

Police are also reminding members of the public to always where their life jackets when going out on the water.
