Simon Fraser University will be building a memorial to remember the residential school experience.
The memorial follows the recommendations of the Truth and Reconciliation Commission, which calls for commemoration projects on the theme of reconciliation.
William Lindsay is the Director of the Office for Aboriginal Peoples.
Lindsay is of Cree-Stoney heritage, but spent many years in the northwest in Hazelton and Smithers.
He says the memorial will be more than just a stone mural.
Another component could be a garden with plants used by First Nations.
The memorial will also include an educational component, since it’ll be placed in the Faculty of Education.
Lindsay says this memorial will be of tremendous importance to future SFU students.
The project will be done in consultation with Reconciliation Canada and the TRC, and is expected to be completed within a couple of years.
