Site picked for Quesnel Arena Replacement

The Mayor of Quesnel says the North Cariboo Arena Replacement is now a 2016 project.

Bob Simpson says the North Cariboo Joint Planning Committee has unanimously endorsed a resolution to go ahead with project at the former CRD Library parking lot adjacent to the existing Twin Arenas.

Simpson says unanticipated site development costs for a stand-alone site were largely to blame for the most recent cost estimate of $22.3 million.

Simpson says the main down-scaling will likely mean reducing the number of seats from 1600 to 1200 which will allow the other amenities, including multi-purpose areas and meeting rooms, to remain.

The mayor says at the end of the day, the goal is to have a project that the community can be proud of for the next 30-50 years that is fully utilized and minimizes the burden on taxpayers.
