The District of Kitimat says it’s quickly claiming the dubious distinction of being one of BC’s top communities for bear destruction.
The District says yet another bear was put down in the community this week bringing to six the number of the animals killed this season.
Conservation Officer Tracy Walbauer says while this year doesn’t look particularly bad compared to other seasons, he says there are a lot of bears in the Kitimat area.
Walbauer says the bear deaths are directly related to residents not properly storing their garbage.
The District and Conservation Officers will be conducting community checks looking for improperly stored garbage.
The fines are steep for those not in compliance with a minimum fine of $575.
