Skeena sockeye return estimates down by 1.6 million

Return estimates for Skeena sockeye have plummeted over the last two weeks.

The Department of Fisheries and Oceans says approximately 330,000 sockeye have migrated into the Skeena River as of Thursday, July 14th.

If the run timing is average, DFO says about 24 percent of the total sockeye return should have passed the test fishery at Tyee.

With nearly 15,000 fish caught in commercial gillnet fisheries, the DFO puts the total Skeena sockeye return to Canada at 1.4 million down more than half from an initial estimate of 3 million fish.

The DFO says it will continue to monitor the Tyee escapement and make future commercial management decisions accordingly.
