Some North Coast residents awoke this morning to find out that they slept through a tsunami warning.
Some communities have warning sirens, but the City of Prince Rupert decommissioned its sirens a number years ago.
City Communications Manager Veronika Stewart says technology has changed the way tsunami and other alerts are distributed, adding social media plays a large role.
But Stewart says the city will look at other possible alert systems when they have a debrief of the latest alert.
Stewart adds the city did mobilize RCMP and Search and Rescue to door-knock in vulnerable areas in the event an evacuation was needed, but she says the city’s location means it wouldn’t see a typical tsunami event.
Stewart says the city is in the final stages of awarding a contract to do work which will better map zones of risk for water surges.
