Smithers gets funding for airport modernization

Smithers Regional Airport is getting a modernization with a $4-million grant from the federal Gas Tax Fund.

The city is putting in $2-million dollars of it’s own money.

The $6-million modernization project will expand the terminal by 6,000 sq ft, include accessible washrooms in the secure hold room, upgrades to the fire alarm and sprinkler system, reconfiguration of the check-in, baggage claim, baggage handling and security areas, and installing a geothermal heating system.

Smithers Regional Airport was built in the 1960s.
