The Smithers Public Library has been recognized for its community work last week.

The library was given the Building Better Communities Award by the British Columbia Library Association.

Wendy Wright is with the Smithers library and says libraries are an important centre for communities.

She says while the number of books being borrowed has gone down province-wide, libraries services and programs have expanded.

Wright says the Smithers library has been actively engaging partners to leverage those community connections.

One event that’s coming up in June will look at reconciliation.

Wright says because the library is seen as a communal space for everybody, it makes it an ideal venue for what can be difficult discussions.

The reconciliation event will be on June 10th with more details to be released soon.
